Director R.K. Selvamani was one of the most popular and talked-about directors in the late eighties and throughout the nineties. He had made several action-packed thrillers in Captain Prabhakaran, Pulan Visaranai, Makkal Aatchi, Rajasthan and Raja Muthirai besides some romantic films like Chembaruthi.
After a long break, the director who married actress Roja, is returning back to his directing ways. He is all set to make Akila to announce his comeback. Talking about his comeback his film, Selvamani says “I have played a significant role in the film Akila in the role of a commoner who raises his voice for people’s issues. I have always been a daring film-maker who speaks out his mind irrespective of whatever could be the response to it.
“Akila speaks about the many issues the people face in their day-to-day lives. I approached a few leading actors to play some roles in the films. They told me that they’d act in the film if I made certain ‘changes’ in those characters. I said I’d stick to my characterization and script. Finding no suitable actor to play the protagonist, I decided to do the role myself.
“The shooting would be wrapped up in a few days time. I would prove my detractors wrong who had written me off,” says Selvamani. Talk is going on in hushed tones in Kollywood about the artistes who had spurned Selvamani’s offer to act in his film!
