Sampanth Raj loves doing negative roles

Character-actor Sampath Raj a.k.a. Sampath debuted as an actor in director Samuthirakkani’s Vijayakanth-starrer Neranja Manasu a few years back. The actor gave glimpses of his acting prowess in his very first film and held his own against the likes Vijayakanth and others. The actor hasn’t looked back ever since.

He played meaningful and appreciable roles in films like Saroja, Kaadhalil Vizhundhaen, Thamirabharani, Porkalam and Aaranya Kandam. A post-graduate in political science, Sampath has earned the reputation of an actor who can excel in all kinds of roles, that too within a short span of time.

The actor, though, doesn’t want his family members to watch all his films. He is obviously hesitant that some of his characters, especially the characters which have shades of grey, may not go down well with his family members. “Of course, I’d like to ‘hide’ certain films of mine from my family. My latest release Varnam is one such film; I’m apprehensive that the character I play on-screen should in way affect my family.

“To be frank, negative roles offer more scope to an actor to show his creatively and display his acting prowess in a very different way. I admire the late Raghuvaran’s acting a lot; he has excelled in all kinds of roles from being a hero to a villain and then as a character artiste in many films. I would love to emulate his style and want to create my own audience who come to watch films for my character in those films,” concludes Sampath.
