Superstar Rajinikanth inaugurated an NGO which has dedicated its activities towards curing a rare disease named Cystinosis which mainly affects children. At the function held yesterday to inaugurate the NGO, ‘cystocon’ medicines worth 2 lakh each were given to two children who happen to be suffering from this rare disease.
For the first time in the country, an NGO has been exclusively formed to deal with the requirements arising out of this disease. Named as ‘Sapiens Health Foundation’ , the NGO had invited Rajini to inaugurate its Chennnai chapter. Rajini thanked the organizers for inviting them and said he’d provide all possible assistance in this regard.
Dr. Rajan Ravichandran of MIOT Hospital who is also the founder of SHF, said “Cystinosis is a rare kind of disease which affects the children. At present, as many as 2,000 children the world over have been affected by this particular disease. We’re yet to find out as to the number of children in the country who are affected by this disease. So far, we have found out 6 of them and are treating them.
“The disease is not a tangible one. If the child is malnourished or doesn’t have the desired growth or suffers from sugar-related complaints, these can be taken as symptoms. If the disease is detected at an early stage, we can save the child at any cost. We have given away medicines to two children which have cost Rs.4 lakhs. We are collecting funds to support the NGO in this endeavour.”
