‘Ponniyin Selvan’, one of the most read novels in Tamil, is known for its grandeur and Mani Ratnam is gearing up to make it a real big venture. He is planning foe a mega budget of over 200 crores and roping in the leading stars to match the grandeur. The latest addition in to the cast is none other than the pretty Anushka Shetty. She will play the inimitable character of Kundhavai in the epic, it is reported.
Vijay, Arya and Tollywood’s Maheshbabu would be playing the lead roles in the film. Vishal, who was also under consideration, reportedly lost out to Arya. The talented Arya, who had been courted by Lingusamy, Boopathy Pandian and Rajesh for their successive films, has decided to keep every other director waiting and has given bulk dates to Maniratnam to be used at the latter’s will.
Interestingly, Vasanth, the director who made films like ‘Keladi Kanmani’, ‘Rhythm’ and ‘Satham Podadhay’, has been roped in to assist his mentor Mani Ratnam in this venture.
Mani has long been toying with epic stories, with his Rajni-Mammootty starrer ‘Thalapathy’ billed as an adaptation of the epic ‘Mahabharatha’. ‘Raavan’, his latest film, was a take off of the epic ‘Ramayan’ and continuing in the same mode, Mani is how hell-bent on making ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, which had been tried and abandoned by the legendary MGR and Kamal Haasan.
