In the mid-nineties when there were hardly a handful of Tamil television channels in operation with Sun TV leading the pack, not many television anchors were well-known as the people were slowly getting into the scheme of things and feeling their way into the onset of the theme of ‘satellite television’. Years on, however, they have almost become addicted to it now.
In the mid-nineties, an anchor named Uma Maheswari started hosting a live dial -in programme for the newly launched Sun TV . Sponsored by soft-drink brand Pepsi, the programme became so popular that Uma became ‘Pepsi’ Uma as the days passed by. Endowed with a naturally sweet voice, all Uma did was to listen patiently to all her callers and speak to them depending on their gender, age and status in society.
After hosting the show for Sun TV for 10 long years, she moved to Kalaignar TV channel in 2007 when it was inaugurated.
Uma is married to Sukesh, a software professional. After a long hiatus, she is now back on television and would soon be hosting a show for Jaya TV. Uma holds the honour of being the only TV personality from South to have been interviewed by the razor-sharp Karan Thapar on his ‘Face To Face’ talk show for BBC.
Uma’s re-entry is being waited with keen interest by her fans (yes, many of them are still her fans). Titled as Album, the new show by Uma would look into the past and the many interesting incidents that have taken place in celebrities’ lives. The show is likely to go on air soon on Jaya TV.
