After a forgettable outing in the year 2010 with Raavanan in Tamil and Raavan in Hindi, ace director Maniratnam has taken a break of more than an year now and has launched his next directorial venture titled Kadal (meaning ‘ocean’ in Tamil). The script of the film, as suggested by the title, would revolve around the lives of fishermen who depend on the ocean for their very livelihood.
Maniratham is also launching Gautham, son of actor Karthik, as the hero in this film. Samantha, who has been making news quite frequently in recent times, has been paired opposite Gautham. Samantha is also playing the heroine in ace director Gautham Menon’s Needhanae En Ponvasantham opposite Jiiva, an indication of her growing stature as an actress.
Arvind Swamy, who was once the heartthrob of millions of women when he debuted in Maniratnam’s Thalapathy and did films like Roja and Bambai, returns to big-screen after a long hiatus. The actor, who sports a bald pate these days, plays a significant role in thef film, whose release and distribution rights have been sold for a whopping sum of 25 crore.
Though Arvind had been refusing offeres from many directors for a comeback to acting, he could hardly refuse when Mani, his mentor, made the offer to him to star in Kadal. The release rights of the film, which is expected to hit the screens on Deepavali later this year, has been secured by Gemini Films.
