Finally, the shooting of ace director Maniratnam’s upcoming film Kadal got underway. The film marks the debut as hero of Gautham, son of veteran actor Karthick. Upcoming and talented actress Samantha, who has appeared in a couple of films in Tamil, is paired up opposite Gautham.
The shoot commenced at a sea-side village between the port city of Tuticorin and the holy town of Tiruchendur. Said to be based on the lives of fishermen, the film is a romantic story in typical Maniratnam’s style. Mani is also said to be taking up the increasing number of incidents of Tamil fishermen getting attached by the navy of a neighbouring country (read: Sri Lanka).
Mani’s last film was Raavanan which disappointed at the box-office when it released more than an year back. The film is made only in Tamil unlike Raavanan which was made simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu as well. Mani is said to be making an earnest effort to showcase the mostly pathetic lives of fishermen who depend on the ocean for their livelihood.
‘Action King’ Arjun and Arvind Swamy (who played hero in Maniratnam’s earlier films Roja and Bombay in the nineties) would be essaying prominent roles in the film which has music by A.R. Rahman and cinematography by Rajiv Menon.
