Mollywood’s megastar Mammootty has spoken up supporting Tamil Nadu’s case in the perennial water-sharing row beween the States of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In order to meet its needs vis-à-vis the requirement of water and electricity, Tamil Nadu has to secure the same from the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Kerala. However, more often than not, ‘dirty’ politics gets mixed up in these issues.
Early last week, a terrible bomb blast shook the fire-cracker manufacturing city of Sivakasi in the State, claiming the livies of as many as 40 innocent civilians who happened to be residing near the place of the blast. When the requirement arose for medicines to treat the fire/burn injuries, Mammootty sent medicines and tablets worth Rs.35 lakhs to the town free-of-cost.
Mammootty’s spontaneous gesture moved the Tamil populace in the State as none of the frontline stars in Kollywood contributed towards the rescue and rehabilitation work. Mammootty, however, downplayed his help to the suffering people by terming it as a ‘small timely help’. He had also said that he’d alwas remain loyal to the God for giving him an opportunity to ‘serve’ the people.
In an interview to a popular regional magazine, Mammootty has also expressed his opinion about the ongoing water row between the States. In what might easily be perceived as pro-Tamil Nadu stance, Mammootty has said “Only if the farmers of Tamil Nadu work in the agricultural fields, we in Kerala would be able to eat our food without starving. For this, we (Kerala) ought to continue to help Tamil Nadu by providing water at every available opportunity!”
