Ilayaraja

There isn’t a single milestone that’s left to be achieved in his path in the film industry; there isn’t a single playback singer who hasn’t felt proud to be singing in his music; finally, there can’t be any lyricist who is thrilled to have his lyric set to tune by him: he’s none other than our own ‘Maestro’ Ilayaraja, who turns 68 today!

‘Isaignani’, as he is fondly referred to, never believes in throwing a lavish birthday bash; he has always been like that. Simpleton to the core, he lets his grand music speak for himself. His musical sojourn, which began in mid-seventies, is continuing for the past 35 years in an unhindered manner as the Maestro has been able to maintain his health all these years by God’s grace.

Anyone who has a taste for melodies would agree that Ilaiyaraaja’s hunger for producing quality music remains non-satiated as the tunes from his debut film ‘Annakkali’ to his latest offering in ‘Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai’ have continued to enthrall his fans and music-lovers the world over.

Not the one to forget his poverty-ridden childhood and adolescent days, the ‘Maestro’ still vividly recalls his first ‘income’ (which was Rs.7) in the form of weekly wages earned by watering the grass when he was still in high school. His music has made the careers of many directors, produces, actors, actresses, comedians, etc. Even his background score in certain films is so famous that people tend to remember the musical score but not the films’ titles.

On his birthday today, let’s wish the ‘Maestro’ to continue to churn out riveting music to keep us in happy spirits for many more years to come!
