Yesterday, the press was full of reports of an impending re-union which has been awaited with bated breath by many within the Tamil film industry. Reports said that superstar Rajinikanth would be joining ‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Haasan’s historical epic film Maruthanayagam in a parallel role to that of Kamal himself.
The prospect of watching both Rajini and Kamal together on-screen after more than three decades. Though Rajini and Kamal had starred together in as many as 10 films, all those films released till the early eighties and ever sine, both have chartered their respective courses separately to emerge as the leading heroes of Kollywood. In this backdrop, their re-union was awaited with great interest.
Kamal launched Maruthanayagam, a film reportedly about the great warrior Yusuf Khan of the 18th century, way back in 1997 when Queen Elizabeth of England attended the film’s muhurat. The film’s budget was expected to cross more than 100 crores and due to budgetary constraints, the film couldn’t proceed beyond the trailer version and it was assumed that the film had been ‘dropped’.
Nikhil Murugan, Kamal’s PRO, has denied the news item which had appeared in a leading Mumbai daily to the effect that Rajini might join Kamal on board for the film Maruthanayagam. In his Twitter account, Nikhil has said that the news wasn’t true. “The news about Rajini starring in Marudhanayagam is false, its an 15 year old news..Kamal sir haven’t spoken anything about this recently.,” he tweeted.
Kamal is presently wrapping up his upcoming film Viswaroopam which he also producers and directs. His upcoming project could be a Tamil-English bilingual starring Hollywood star Jackie Chan.
