It was rumoured for the past few months but has now turned out to be nothing but the truth. Ace director Mani Ratnam, whose latest film ‘Raavan‘ didn’t do as well as expected at the box-office last year, is all set to introduce actor Karthik’s son Gautham as hero in celluloid.
It may be recalled that Karthik has had the distinction of starring in as many as three of the top director’s movies: ‘Mouna Raagam‘, ‘Agni Natchathiram‘ and the latest ‘Raavan‘ where he played a minor role. Karthik, who had been waiting for an ideal launch pad to launch his son into films, is said to be quite happy that the director with the Midas’ Touch has agreed to launch his son.
Some time back, Mani Ratnam wanted to bring to celluloid version the epic Tamil novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ penned by the late Kalki by casting Vijay, Vikram, Anushka, Priyanka Chopora and Tollywood’s Mahesh Babu. However, the director dropped the film altogether apparently after sensing that the budget of the film might grow beyond manageable proportions.
Along with Karthik’s son, a newcomer would also be introduced by Mani who would be debuting as heroine in this as yet untitled film. There could be more new faces when the cast is finalized, with Karthik slated to appear in a few sequences as ‘guest star’. Locations have reportedly been finalized and the film will have music by Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman.
The film would be made only in Tamil, making it the first film to be made in one language by the director ever since his ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ in the years 2002. After 2002, all his films have been either bilingual or trilingual affairs.
