A huge music concert would be held in Madurai by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja for the benefit of his fans down South. An announcement to this effect was made to the press by Karthik Raja, eldest son of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja and a noted music director in his own right. Almost all leading playback singers who have sung in Maestro’s films are expected to take part in the Madurai concert.
Karthik conducted the ‘King of Kings’ music concert recently in Malaysia in place of Ilaiyaraaja as the Maestro couldn’t take part in the planned concert as he had taken ill a few days prior to the scheduled date of the concert. However, so as not to make his fans feel disappointed, the Maestro addressed them via video-conferencing mode and apologized to them for not being able to make it to Malaysia on the said day.
Speaking to newsmen, Karthik Raja said “We are planning to hold a live-in music concert by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja in Madurai on April 05. The concert has been titled as ‘Rajavin Sangeetha Thirunaal’. The reason for holding the concert in Madurai is because when Appa (father) fell ill late last year due to chest-pain, the first enquiry about his well-being was made from Pannaiyapuram. Many of them wanted to visit Appa to enquire his well-being and be near him.
“Fans from all over the world kept talking to us over phone and cell-phone. Keeping in view Appa’s health, we didn’t allow anyone to call on him at the Hospital. We also decided to hold a grand concert in Tamil Nadu itself on the lines of concerts we hold abroad. We decided to dedicate the concert to average Tamil music love and to the Maestro’s fans. Though we wanted to hold the concert in Pannaiyapuram, lack of space has made us shift the venue to Madurai.
“We would also be holding another such concert in Theni. Along with Ilaiyaraaja, all leading playback singers would take part in the proposed concert,” concluded Karthik Raja.
