The Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK), the self-styled patron of Tamil culture to be ‘observed’ in Tamil films, is at it again. The organization has come out with its guns blaring and this time, the actress who is bearing the brunt of its attack is none other than our Shriya Saran.
Shriya Saran, who has gone to Sri Lanka to shoot for her upcoming Hindi-English film ‘Winds of Change’ directed by Deepa Mehta, made a brief visit to Chennai last week to dance in the opening ceremony of IPL-IV along with Shah Rukh Khan. She had reportedly told presspersons that she found Lanka to be a ‘beautiful and wonderful country’ full of scenic locations.
This has triggered HMK’s opposition. It has come out with a statement saying that actresses had been ‘advised’ not to tour Lanka, which committed genocide of Tamils not so long ago. Shriya’s statement in praising Lanka’s ‘beauty’ is highly condemned, it said and added that Shriya should show some kind of ‘social responsibility’.
If Shriya continues to do so, we would call for a boycott of her films, the statement said.
