Noted producer-director and former Union Minister Dasari Narayana Rao has condemned in no uncertain terms the attitude of many actresses who prefer ‘inaugurating’ jewellery shops and other commercial establishments rather than showing any noticeable interest in taking part in filmy functions held to mark the success of film(s) and award-functions.
“The film industry should boycott such actresses who boycott film-related functions; only then would they fall in line,” thundered the veteran. He was participating as a special invitee in a function held in Hyderabad to give away the ‘Vamsi’ awards. Dasari was visibly disappointed by the absence of many actresses who weren’t present to receive their awards.
“These actresses make a lot of money thanks to their stint in films. On top of it, they spend considerable time inaugurating jewellery shops, shopping malls and textile showrooms. I hear they charge somewhere around Rs.15 lakhs to Rs.1 crore to take part in these functions. They should bear in mind that only due to the popularity earned through films that they are being invited for these inaugural functions.
“As a result, they conveniently skip award-giving functions such as these; I would like the film industry to take a serious view about it. Actresses boycotting functions should be boycotted by the film industry too. They (the actresses) must be made to feel that they are part of the industry and are bound to attend functions like these,” said the veteran, who incidentally turned 66 yesterday.
