In a bizarre incident, a teenaged school student has committed suicide after watching Raghava Lawrence’s latest film ‘Kanchana’. The film, a sequel to Lawrence’s successful ‘Muni’ a couple of years back, has been doing very well at all the centres in the State, thanks to the comic and horror elements in the film. Special appearance by ‘supreme hero’ Sarath Kumar is the talk of the town now.
Ilavarasan, a Class IX student of a Govt. School in Rajajipuram, Erode, was a resident of the Maakaliyappan Koil Street. He watched the film ‘Kanchana’, which has been running successfully at the District, along with his friends a few days back. After watching the film, the fear of the ‘evil spirit’ engulfed Ilavarasan’s heart. In the night, he used to get up from his sleep many times and would scream.
His panic-stricken parents took him to a nearby temple and applied vibhuti (sacred ash) on his forehead. On the day when the incident occurred (4th Sept.), Ilavarasan reportedly immolated himself after pouring kerosene all over his body. He was rushed to the Erode Govt. Hospital where he breathed his last.
His grieving father Dhandapani laments that his son had been telling for the past few days that a ‘black shadow’ had been following him (much like what happens in the film). “On the fateful day, he got up from his sleep around mid-night and committed self-immolation,” he breaks down. The Karungalpalayam Police are investigating the case further.
