Director Bharathiraja is in the ‘action mode’ once again. After taking a reasonable break of more than a couple of years since making Bommalattam which marked the entry of Bollywood’s versatile Nana Patekar in Kollywood, the director is on the move with the launch of his latest directorial venture titled Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum.
He starred in last year’s film Rettaichuzhi which was produced by director Shankar and directed by debutant Thamira. The film had Aree and Anjali in lead roles but had the two veterans in K. Balachander and Bharathiraja essaying pivotal roles. Though it wasn’t a commercial success, it hasn’t deterred Bharathiraja from donning the grease paint again. Yes, he is all set to play a cameo in Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum.
The film has had its share of controversies already. Actor-director Parthiban and actress Priyamani were first roped in to play the lead roles in the film by the director, considered by many as the man who re-wrote the ‘history’ of Tamil cinema in the seventies and eighties. For some inexplicable reasons, though, Parthiban and Priyamani found themselves out of the project and were replaced respectively by actor-director Ameer and Iniya.
Bharathiraja contested for the post of president of the Directors’ Association early this year which saw acrimony prevailing all around as a group led by Ameer deciding to contest against the veteran and his team. Due to last-minute intervention by stalwarts such as K.S. Ravikumar, an ‘election clash’ was averted and Bharahiraja became president only to relinquish the post a few months later citing his ill-health.
The film, which also has a significant role for Karthika (of Ko fame), is progressing briskly. For the first time, Bharathiraja would be working with young music director G.V. Prakash Kumar for this film.
