Bharathiraja

Veteran director Bharathiraja quit his post as the president of the Tamil Film Directors’ Association. The 70-year old director, who always appears clad in his trademark jeans, put in his papers today after taking over as president. Ironically, he handed over the responsibilities of presidentship to director Cheran, who took on his new assignments along with Ameer and Samuthirakkani.

Cheran and Samuthirakkani were elected as vice-presidents while Ameer was elected as the general secretary. Jananathan was elected as the Treasurer of the Association. All the governing body members took on their new assignments only recently. Ameer told newsmen that the governing body members couldn’t assume their responsibilities as it took some time to file the budget of the Association for the current eyar.

Thanks to the MoU between the Association and the SRM University, Kattangulathur, as many as 80 assistant directors would be imparted training every year in all the aspects of film-making. The course would contain all the aspects of film-making, said Ameer and added that “SRM University had agreed to offer the courses at concessional fee of Rs.3,000/-.”

Cheran, commenting about Bharathiraja’s move of entrusting him with his job, said that Bharathiraja’s decision was taken as he had to take some much-needed ‘rest’. “He had taken the decision entirely on his own. Nothing needs to be read into his decision to hand over the responsibilities to me and Samuthirakkani. As and when his assistance is required, he would always be there to guide us,” said Cheran.

Is it so?
