Ace director Bharathiraja is known to be in the habit of speaking his heart out. The director, who is pushing 70 but hasn’t lost his passion for making and recognizing good cinema, is at it again. This time, the target of his attack is nothing but Kollywood, of which he is also a part.
Participating in a rally held at the Marina Beach in Chennai on behalf of the Directors’ Association, Bharathiraja said “The film industry thrives mainly by the support and money power provided by you (people). If the members of the film fraternity don’t raise their voices for the people in the Mullai Periyar dam row, then you have to take them to task for the same,” said Bharathiraja.
It may be worth mentioning, he has stalled the shooting of his dream project Annakkodiyum Kodiveeranum as it has two Malayalee actresses- Karthika and Iniya in the lead.
Politician Vaiko of MDMK, directors Bharathiraja and Thangar Bachchan and many other film personalities took part at the event. Bharathiraja was in his elements when he lambasted his colleagues in Kollywood. “I haven’t read lot of history and literature but have read the people’s mindset from an emotional point of view. Tamilians are so generous; may be due to this, they have been losing their rights and many other things.
“The Dam issue isn’t just the problem concerning the people of five Districts of the State. It’s an issue concerning the well-being of the entire State. Why the Tamil actors and actresses, who have been thriving by the popularity, money and fame given by the people, haven’t thought it appropriate to raise their voice in support of the people? You have to ask them this question.
“Tamil Nadu continues to be denied its due advantage in the Dam row. My suggestion to the actors and actresses would be to change the name of Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Association of Cine Artistes) into Tamil Nadu Nadigar Sangam. The Central Govt. should act at once to prevent Tamilians getting attacked and made to scurry to save their lives in Kerala,” thundered Bharathiraja.
