The Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) has announced that it would lay ‘siege’ to superstar Rajinikanth’s Poes Garden residence in Chennai if he chooses actress Asin as his heroine in his upcoming film Kochadaiyan. The sudden ‘hatred’ to Asin is the direct fall-out of the Mullai Periyar Dam issue which has strained relations between the States and the people of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
That Asin Thottumkal a.k.a. Asin is a Malayalee actress is a well-known fact ever since she debuted in Tamil films through the late Jiiva’s Ullam Ketkumae which released some years back. Industry watchers feel that it is indeed ironical that in the backdrop of the changed ‘political scenario’ in the State, her ‘nativity’ is being blown out of proportions.
HMK, the self-styled patron of Tamil culture in Tamil films, has said that it would oppose vehemently if Asin is paired opposite Rajini in Kochadaiyan, a period flick to be directed by Rajini’s younger daughter Soundarya. Media reports say that as Anushka (the original choice to play Rajini’s heroine) is too busy with her pre-committed projects, the choice has zeroed in on Asin.
Kannan, the organizing secretary of HMK, has said that the outfit opposed Asin when she nonchalantly visited Lanka to shoot for her Hindi film last year without paying any respect to the sentiments of Tamilians. “We demanded that Asin should be barred from acting in Tamil films; the Nadgiar Sangam interveneed in the matter and bailed her out. Now that Mullai Periyar issue has become a serious one, we won’t allow Asin to be paired up opposite Rajinikanth.
“In case she is cast as Rajini’s heroine in Kochadaiyan, we would not only oppose it tooth and nail but would also lay ‘siege’ to superstar Rajini’s Poes Garden residence and would also hold protest demonstrations at all the places where the film would be shot,” said Kannan.
