Vasanthabalan’s Angadi Theru found it tough to make it through for the Indian submissions at the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
It was a path breaking effort in terms of realistic cinema, and an eye opener for many who always take things for granted and don’t get enough of their luxuries in life, unfortunately the film lost to Bollywood’s Aamir Khans Peepli Live in the race for Oscars, well the only downside of the movie was the forced dance sequence in the stores during a night where terrified pair of Mahesh and Anjali cannot escape the stores before it shuts down business for the day.
Recently the movie was screened at the 41st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held from November 22 to December 2 at Goa.
On November 27(the day which the movie was screened) many were bowled over by the movie. Moreover, there was a repeat show on December 1 as well. Legendary film maker Govind Nihalani personally applauded Vasanthabalan for making a wonderful film.
Produced by Ayngaran International and released early this year, it did real good business at the box office, never mind the statistics because movies like these don’t come by often and are an invaluable asset to the art of movie making.
Well we don’t know the reasons for why it did not get selected for an international audience, but all the same we are lucky to have movie like this coming across showing the ground reality of what life is. No doubt that it had to catch the attention of many at the film festival.
