After more than three years of its launch, SPB Charan’s ‘Aaranya Kandam‘ might finally hit the theatres soon. Charan, who has produced the film under his Capital Film Works banner, can’t stop appreciating the work of Thiagarajan Kumararaja, the director.
The film incidentally marks the Tamil debut of veteran Bollywood actor Jacike Shroff, who made a sensational debut in Hindi films in the mid-eighties with ‘Hero’. ‘Aarnya Kandam’ was screened at the South Asian International film festival held in New York and bagged the jury award.
Though the film has been cleared by the Censors with an ‘A’ certificate, Charan is at pains to note that it’s not an ‘adult’ film. Sources at the Censor Board say that the film was cleared for public viewing only after the officials effected as many as 52 cuts. The ‘A’ grading is mainly for the ‘language’ the characters utter on-screen but in the filmmaker’s opinion, the dialogues were integral to the film’s script.
The film’s crew and technicians recently met the press on the eve of the release of the film. Jackie Shroff, Ravi Krishna, Yasmin Popanna and Sampath Raj play important roles in the film. Though a tentative date on the release of the film has not been decided yet, it is expected to hit the screens at any moment now that the Censors have cleared it.
The film depicts in graphic detail the primitive instinct of a male mind which is almost like a ‘man with an animal instinct concept’. Hence the title ‘Aaranya Kandam’ from the Hindu epic Ramayana has been chosen for the film.
