The 9th Chennai International Film Festival which was inaugurated a week back, came to a closing on 22nd Dec 2011 yesterday. The festival saw a total of 133 films from 53 countries being screened between December 14th and the 22nd . But surprisingly there were only 12 Tamil films in the competition, while nine Indian panorama films made their way through to the best list.
The event had some initial hiccups with award-winning Tamils films like Thenmerku Paruvakkatru, Aaranya Kaandam and Sengadal, not considered worthy of even entering the competition. Then it was the Director’s Union locking horns with the committee members that created some commotion.
The last day of the festival had the much awaited winners list announced with Dhanush’s National award sweeping Aadukalam adjudged the Best Movie of the year.
Not far behind was Director Sargunam’s Vaagai Sooda Vaa awarded the second best flick of the year.
A special jury honor was given to writer Bhaskar Sakthi for his contributions in Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai.
Director K Balachander,Suhasini,SarathKumar,Aadhi,Parthiban,Prasanna,Mohan,Dhansika,Rohini,Revathy,Lissy Priyadarshan,Mano Bala,Fathima Babu were present on the last day to present the deserving candidates.
