Dhanush’s latest film 3 has opened to a tremendous and over-whelming welcome in theatres in Chennai, if the data available to the media on this count is any indication to go by. Trade circles say that the audiences’ response to the film, which is the debut directorial venture of Aishwarya Dhanush, has even surprised many media veterans and trade pundits who had written off the film as a ‘one-song wonder’.
The box-office collection or the ticket sales for the initial 3 days has crossed the coveted mark of Re.1 crore and stands at Rs.1.16 crore. The success of the film is attributed majorly to the Why this Kolaveri di…. number set to score by debutant music diretor Anirudh and penned and sung by Dhanush, the national award-winning actor.
Aishwarya has also doubled up as a distributor and distributed the film all over the city of Chennai. The film runs in as many as 25 screens in the city alone. Even on a working day (Monday, the 2nd April), most of these screens recorded 90% of audience’s attendance which is a significant thing. Aishwarya is happy that despite the ‘negative’ press the film got, people flock to theatres in large numbers to watch and enjoy the film.
Distributor Anbu, who has released the film in Madurai locality, says that 3 is easily the most successful Dhanush film as far as collections in the first 3 days are concerned. “We hope the trend continues for a few more weeks,” he said confidently. He provides reasons for the interest in the film. “The Kolaveri song is a major factor but a film can’t run with a single hit film; it has to have some substance in it to sustain the initial interest.
“Even if the film manages to do well for the next couple of weeks registering a minimum of 70% audience, it can be named a super-hit,”he concludes. Producer and father of Dhanush, Kasturi Raja says that many distributors have already started celebrating the film’s success.
